No Child Should Learn Hungry

I never imagined that one day I would be giving back to children walking the same school hallways I once did. Yet, that is exactly where my journey with Backpack Buddies began — not in a meeting room or a planning document, but in a moment of quiet realization that stayed with me long after.

As I became involved in this project, I was confronted with a reality that was both painful and motivating: children in my own community were coming to school hungry. Some of them attend the very elementary schools I once did. Schools where I learned to read, to dream, and to believe that anything was possible. To see children starting their day without enough food was a stark reminder that, for many, hunger is still an invisible barrier to learning.

As a child, I took simple things for granted — breakfast before school, the energy to focus in class, the comfort of knowing my basic needs were met. Seeing that not every child has that same foundation was deeply unsettling. Hunger doesn’t just affect the body; it affects confidence, focus, emotional well‑being, and a child’s ability to fully participate in school life. No child should have to choose between paying attention and coping with an empty stomach.

That realization changed everything for me.

What began as a project quickly became a personal mission. I knew I couldn’t walk away knowing what I now knew. Inspired by the work of Backpack Buddies and driven by my own connection to these schools, I committed myself to making a tangible difference. Through community outreach, coordination, and generosity from others who shared this vision, I was able to gather $3,000 worth of food donations to support Backpack Buddies.

Each backpack filled represented more than food — it represented care, dignity, and reassurance. It meant that a child could arrive at school nourished and ready to learn. It meant fewer distractions caused by hunger and more space for curiosity, confidence, and joy. Knowing that these donations directly supported children in my community was both humbling and incredibly rewarding.

This experience reminded me that meaningful change often starts close to home. Sometimes it begins with looking back at where you came from and recognizing how far you’ve come — and then asking yourself how you can help others do the same. Supporting Backpack Buddies reinforced my belief in community responsibility and the power of individual action. You don’t need to solve everything to make a difference; you just need to start.

I am deeply grateful to Backpack Buddies for the work they do every day, and to everyone who helped make this contribution possible. Most of all, I am grateful for the reminder that when we choose compassion and action, even small efforts can have a lasting impact on a child’s life.

Because no child should ever have to learn on an empty stomach.
