Healing and Essentials

A single grant can do far more than fund a program—it can create a ripple effect of dignity, healing, and stability across communities when used with intention.
Through The New Horizons Foundation, we had the opportunity to steward a $4,500 grant in a way that addressed both emotional well-being and essential daily needs. Rather than concentrating resources in one area, we intentionally distributed funding across two complementary streams to maximize impact: youth mental health and family support.
In Phase 1, funding was directed to Covenant House Vancouver in the Downtown Eastside to enable an Art Therapy program for unhoused youth. These sessions were more than creative activities. They provided a safe, supportive environment where young people experiencing trauma, instability, and loss could express themselves, process emotions, and feel a sense of belonging. Staff observed increased engagement, calmness, and confidence among participants. Art became a voice for youth who often feel unheard.
As the project evolved, we adapted to shifting priorities at Covenant House due to additional funding sources. Without changing our mission, we pivoted Phase 2 to focus on essential support for families facing socio-economic hardship. In partnership with Mamas for Mamas, and supported by vendor partnerships such as Nature's Path, we directed remaining funds toward food, diapers, and baby formula for single mothers and infants. These essentials reduced immediate stress for families navigating daily hardship and offered reassurance that they were not alone.
This initiative was guided by clear principles: dignity, equity, confidentiality, and responsible stewardship of resources. Families were identified through trusted channels, and distribution was handled with care and privacy. Vendor partnerships allowed us to stretch the value of every dollar through discounted purchasing, ensuring that nearly 98% of the grant was used directly for community benefit.
Over 250 individuals were supported through this project, including unhoused youth and families from diverse backgrounds. Two distinct outcome areas were addressed: emotional resilience through art-based therapy and food security through essential supplies. By concentrating funds where they could make the greatest difference, we avoided spreading resources too thin and instead created meaningful, measurable impact.
This project also strengthened partnerships across organizations and community networks, demonstrating how collaboration can multiply outcomes. What began as a single grant became a coordinated effort between nonprofit organizations, community partners, and volunteers working toward a shared purpose.
The most powerful outcome, however, was not numerical. It was visible in the sense of calm in a youth’s artwork, the relief on a mother’s face when receiving baby essentials, and the trust built between organizations serving vulnerable populations. These moments reflected the true purpose of the initiative: turning compassion into action and resources into dignity-centered change.
This experience reinforced an important lesson for us at The New Horizons Foundation: when funding is guided by empathy, flexibility, and thoughtful planning, even modest resources can create lasting impact across multiple communities.
